COVID-19: What I’ve learned so far.

It’s been exactly three weeks since the Ontario government closed schools in response to COVID-19. That seems like a lifetime ago. After experiencing writer’s block for the first time ever, I am slowing starting to find my words. And although I would love to turn back time and return to my crazy hockey mom schedule, I am finally settling in to a ‘new normal’ routine.

Here’s what I’ve learned so far:

I need to be kind to myself.
I’ve come to accept that I am not the super-efficient multi-tasking entrepreneur that I was three weeks ago. Even though I’ve always worked from a home office, I don’t have the emotional or mental energy to put in a solid eight hours in front of my computer. Instead, I’m setting one professional goal per day. Sometimes, you have to cut yourself some slack. This is definitely one of those times.

I have raised a great kid.
My teenager can be obstinate and mouthy. And boy, can he roll his big green eyes. But I haven’t seen this side of him since the day school and hockey came to a screeching halt. Yes, he’s playing video games until the wee hours of the morning and sleeping until noon. But he’s also sweet, funny, and respectful. And he’s eating everything I cook without complaint. If the coronavirus does indeed keep us under house arrest for the next four or five months, I’m sure we’ll have our moments. But for now, I’m in awe of how well he is handling the situation.

I love baking bread.
I had always thought that my baking skills ended with muffins and quick breads. Well, I’ve successfully discarded that limiting belief. So far I’ve whipped up Challah, Crusty French Bread and Pitas. Judging by my Instagram feed, I’m not the only one who has turned to baking as a form of therapy. When this is all over, there's a good chance that I will never buy a store-baked loaf again.
