Do you have what it takes to be a freelance copywriter?

Do you have what it takes to be a freelance copywriter?

These days, it seems like everyone wants a fulfilling career that offers a decent paycheck and the freedom to work from anywhere. Being a freelance copywriter can fit the bill – and you don’t even need any special training to get started.

While I have yet to become the six-figure copywriter you may have encountered on social media, I have never considered trading in the uncertainty of freelance life for a cubicle or corporate co-working space. I’ve worked more-or-less when (and where) I wanted, and earned enough to happily continue being self-employed.

But making a living as a freelance copywriter isn’t as easy as some would have you believe. Being able to write clean, engaging copy is just the beginning. Here’s what else it takes:

A love of language
You don’t have to possess the inspiration of a poet to be a copywriter, but you should have a genuine love of words, the creativity to play with language, and the willingness to work hard to hone your skills. I’ve been writing professionally since 2004, and I’m still learning!

A curious mind
If you’re considering a career as a copywriter, you’ve probably been told to find a niche. While it may be sound advice to write about what you already know, in my experience having the ability to work with a wide variety of people and industries is part of what makes copywriting so much fun. Of course, that means you have to be willing to learn new things.

An eye for detail
As a copywriter, it’s largely up to you to make sure that your copy is factual and free from spelling and grammatical errors. If you’re just not a detail-oriented person, the profession may not be for you.

An ability to hustle
As a freelancer, it will be up to you to land your next gig. So in addition to doing the actual work, you’ll need to work at promoting yourself – through your website, social media, and good old-fashioned networking.

A thick skin
Not every client is going to love your first – or second, or third – draft. If you have a hard time accepting constructive criticism, you may want to pursue a different career path.

A respect for deadlines
Copywriters often work as part of a larger team. You don’t want to hold up a project while others wait on your words. In this business, if you’re able to meet your deadlines, you’re already one step ahead of much of your competition.

Happy copywriting!
